Lunchtime Lecture: Experiences of an open data publisher (a case study in using open data for place-based analysis) – 4 Aug 2016

August 4, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Our August lunchtime lecture is a case study in using and visualising open data sourced from publishers at the local, state and federal government level. The objective of the case study was to identify what data was already available for the demographic profile of a local government area, and the level of investment, grants or funding of non-government services from all levels of government.

Guest presenter Earl Butterworth is a senior business analyst within the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services.

At this lunchtime lecture Earl will share the valuable lessons he learned through combining multiple datasets from several publishers.

Earl’s presentation will cover:

  • the business challenge he was tasked with solving
  • how he went about identifying and sourcing relevant data
  • the barriers he encountered in accessing and using the data
  • the efforts he went to in preparing the data before he could use it and combine with other data
  • the valuable insights gained through the process
