Fostering data reuse and community engagement through next generation open data portals – 21 Apr 2016

April 21, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Come and join us for this important discussion with guest presenter Alex Sales, of OpenDataSoft representative Peclet Technology. Self-service data visualisation, real-time data, open dashboard, data API, API monetisation…. Many government departments and cities around the world are evolving from traditional open data catalogues to more advanced data sharing solutions fulfilling the role of data hub between their organisation, the community, the private sector and developers.

This lunchtime lecture will explore case studies of organisations such as the city of Paris and Brussels who implemented their open data strategies based on next generation open data platforms, and investigate how such technologies have fostered data reuse and community engagement.

The lecture will then demonstrate through a practical example how simple a dormant CSV file is to publish and unleash its value via data API, visualisation and sharing capabilities.

The demo will use the OpenDataSoft platform developed by a Paris based start-up bringing a fresh and innovative approach to managing open data. OpenDataSoft is a member of the ODI start-up program.

Presenter Alex Sales is the founder and director of Peclet Technology, Sydney based company providing contemporary solutions for solving organisations’ open data and data sharing wicked problems.

The following concepts will be discussed during the presentation:
– Data discoverability and cataloguing
– Data API and API management
– Shared vs. closed data
– Real time data
– Big datasets
– Self service data visualisation
– Data visualisation sharing
– Open dashboard
– API monetisation
